[Well.

Today's meeting with the sheriff will be a little different! In that Barnham is bringing Percy in tow. Sup, Sheriff.

He nods to the Sheriff grimly, but today, there's no room for emotion. They don't have the room for it, and no room for mistakes.

Grimly:]

Good day.

This week, we finish this game.
moraled: (bowtie and all. aw....)
[It's Sunday evening and Barnham is knock knocking on Noct's door!

What could it possibly be!

Hopefully it's at a time when Ash isn't around because that would be Awkward af.

This is a great starter, shut up]
moraled: (cat went offline)
[He waits until evening before he goes to find Percy. He figures Percy has enough on his hands--by rights, he should leave this until later to allow Percy time to recover, but they just no longer have time. They don't have time for anything.

That's why he has to talk to Percy in the first place.

He takes a cursory glance around the town, but it's not surprising that Percy isn't there. It's also not surprising that Constantine leads Barnham unerringly to the lake, and it's not surprising that there's the form of a boy who has endured too much sitting there.

... He doesn't like the thought of how much more Percy is going to have to endure before the end.

(But Percy deserves to know. Of all of the people here... well, Percy convinced him when he spoke to wanting to be allowed to execute Will. Percy wants to take control of his own life again.

Well.

This is the first step towards that.)]

Percy Jackson.

[Barnham doesn't really hesitate; he sits down next to Percy on the ground, unbothered by it. Constantine sits next to him, quiet and relatively solemn, for a dog.]

... I wish to inquire as to your mental state, before I go any further.

[He's worried, of course, about Percy. But this is bigger than just Percy, and bigger than just Barnham. This is everyone--and that's why he has to know this before he goes any further with this conversation.

A lot, he thinks, has been leading up to this.]
moraled: (Many emotional conflicts here)
[He's exhausted after the trial. There's no doubting that. Everything that happened was... too much, and quite frankly, his guilt is difficult too. Knowing how hard everyone was searching for the truth, when he was the one who killed them both...

He's dragging, but even so, he immediately goes to the Sheriff, when everyone has dispersed and the Sheriff is back in his office.

He hates this.

He hates all of this, but seeing the way that Jason was so broken, seeing how upset Percy was at being unable to protect Natalie, seeing Noct so pained and struggling at the outcome of the game, inevitable now--

It has to end.

This week, it has to end.]

I would speak with you, Sheriff.
moraled: (Try to stay calm when a fucking shark)
[...As ever, they pick up the pieces, and they carry on. A day or two does little to cushion the blows of the previous week, but they can't stay moping forever. Barnham knows that to be true, and so he's attempting to go about his business like normal, inspecting the town, looking through their supplies in the general store, and other things that were once strange but now have become mundane.

It's odd.

But... it's something they have to do, he believes.

No matter what.

They have to keep moving forward--which means in the day to day? They can't stop moving at all.]
moraled: (Hooman??? HOOMAN??)
[Tripping over Shinnosuke isn't exactly expected (not literally), but he does tilt his head when he sees him moving around the town, and then he steps closer.

It's... more out of concern than anything, really.]

A sincere question for you, Mister Shinnosuke, if you shall take it.

[Without like...sassing or biting his head off.]
moraled: (THE PAPER IS BIGGER THAN THE GOOD)
[It's taken a lot of time to get to this point, but now that he's here... he knows there's no going back. He knows that no matter what, he has to make sure this happens.

And honestly, all he's heard has...convinced him of the truth of the matter. Noctis, asking if he'd figured out a plan yet, to save them all. Percy, asking him if there was fate, destiny, if they could find the way to make this go their way. Papika, sad and missing her family, Jason, trying so hard to take care of everyone, Milla wishing for any other way to stop this, anything.

Sara, telling him to "give 'em hell".

Looks like...in the end, it's up to him, and he knows now that if he's truly a knight, if he's truly someone who wishes for the best for everyone, he has to do this. Even if it makes him feel sick to his stomach to know what he has to do to make it happen.

... It doesn't matter, though, if he hates himself after this. So long as everyone is able to live their lives, and come back to themselves, and not be so tragically cut short... it will be worth it.

So he approaches the Sheriff, when everyone is dealing with other things, when he's in his office, and he breathes out a slow, mostly steady breath.]

... I will do it. I shall play your game, for the sake of ending this game properly.

[There's no winning or losing, not anymore. There's only life or death, and it's Barnham's duty to make sure that at the end of this, there's life.]
moraled: (cat needs to learn some manners)
[He doesn't want to go back to his room. But he has to feed Constantine, and thus he can't avoid the hotel forever; he grimaces but begins to head back, steps only slightly unsteady--though if it's from grief or from alcohol, well, it's hard to tell.

His posture is as military straight as ever, after all, and he only needs a moment to process Percy and Mrs. O'Leary chilling there in front of the hotel.

(He's not sure he's ready to deal with this.

On the other hand, he'll never be ready, and Percy... Percy has been almost unbearably brave.)

Words are hard, though; ultimately, he just ends up gently clearing his throat.

Hi.]
moraled: (fuck many of these in particular)
[He doesn't really want to return to his room. But ultimately, he doesn't have a choice. There is nowhere else for him to go, after all. Sara is in prison, and her room is long empty.

He has no reason to be there.

He sits in his room, on his bed, and watches the clock tick down. He's always been early to bed.

But.

Not tonight.

No, tonight he sits there, with his head in his hands and his fingers buried in his hair, and wonders what the hell he's going to do now, wonders what even is left.

What is even left now?]
moraled: (i was hoping one was a tomato)
[So that was.

Nice and awful.

Actually it wasn't nice at all it was only awful. There's only awfulness, everything is awful, there's no denying how awful it all is, and Barnham doesn't want to go back to his room. Lust died, two weeks ago, and now Russell has done the same, and Barnham had wanted to protect both of them.

Chane, too, is dead.

Yuna is dead.

There has been too much death, too many undeserved deaths, and he doesn't know how to cope with it anymore.

He stares blankly at the open door to his room, but he doesn't go in--he doesn't have anywhere else to go, but he doesn't want to step into that room.]
moraled: (Doggos and snow)
[Well. He did the thing! He killed the person! Also Sei is dead you motherfucker--

So it's just Barnham now, heading right on over to the Sheriff's Station when nobody's around to go chat up a stupid robot Sheriff.

It's a fun time for everyone.

(No, it's not.)]

Sheriff. I would speak with you regarding my reward.

[He totally shot someone for this okay!!]
moraled: (You don a good thing)
[Well.

He's had a day to come to terms with things. They didn't catch Lust's murderer, but they caught a murderer and--

And who is he kidding, really.

This isn't justice.

And it's starting to wear him very, very thin.

... So he's taking Constantine for a jog. It's not that early, so it's a little hot for one, but at least it takes his mind off of things, and Constantine is a Fierce!! Hunter!! so he keeps up alright.

Until they get to the watering hole, and then Barnham pauses, staring at it blankly, before he turns sharply on his heel to go the other way.

IT'S PROBABLY FINE.]
moraled: (Try to stay calm when a fucking shark)
[Eventually, Barnham needs to go to the kitchen to get water for Constantine, at least. Even if he hasn't been super interested in conversation right now... he knows when he has responsibilities, and he's going to stick with those.

Naturally, there's company in the kitchen--though he supposes that's only to be expected, and the company there isn't so bad, as far as company is concerned.]

Miss Xion.

[A nod of greeting!! Sup]
moraled: (pleas pet dog)
[There's one person he has to check on. He's had a few days to come to terms with Lust's death and what they found... but Papika can't be used to finding chopped up bodies, honestly. He has to make sure that she's doing okay after everything.

So he goes to find her, expression reasonably calm.

... Though his brow furrows in a little bit of confusion when he sees her trotting down the hall, carrying...something?]

Miss Papika?
moraled: (so damn smooth)
[WELL.

Welcome to your new room, Russell... it'll probably be fine. Barnham doesn't seem thrilled about going back into his room with Lust dead, but... he's gotta put a brave face on it for Russell anyway.

Besides.

They have things to talk about.]

Young Russell, please, feel free to settle yourself as need be.
moraled: (rippy bits!!)
[Well that was shitty in all ways.

Diving for body parts is not something that Barnham enjoyed at all, and after the investigation he basically immediately disappears into the hotel to find dry clothing and get changed.

Except.

It's Lust's room too. It's Lust's room, and she's dead--after he promised he would protect her.

(Really, he hasn't protected anyone here.

He hasn't done a single thing.)

He grimaces, dripping water from his hair--but he stalks out of the room immediately, towel in hands. He can't stay in there any longer; he'll just begin to dry off his hair in the hall instead, leaning against the wall.

Ugh.]
moraled: (rippy bits!!)
[He has to go searching for her.

He waits until the entire farce is over with--until there's nothing left to watch, because he feels it his duty to see it through to the end. Their mistakes cannot be turned away from or avoided.

But after that...then he seeks her out.

He'll search for her pretty methodically, and once he does find her, his voice is calm. The saloon, huh... that's a fitting place for her to be. He doesn't even mind sitting next to her.]

Miss Maxwell... Are you opposed to company?

[He's calm enough--theoretically. But really, he's simmering too, and having the hardest time with this. But he's even more concerned for her. Apparently, "cooler heads" can't quite handle even this.

(Not that that's surprising.

Can anyone handle this?)]
moraled: (the food giver is trapped!)
[It's after everything... that he steps into the hotel lobby and sees her there. Even if they don't know the outcomes of the votes... she was under suspicion. For a long moment, he's quiet, expression tight--

And then he steps forward towards her, sighing.]

Madam Walken.

I do not intend to interrupt if you do not wish me here.

[He'll step right off if that's the case. But... if not...]
moraled: (I AM ALWAYS AWARE OF DOGS)
[FUCK

Everything is awful, and Barnham is pissed. Eventually, he ends up storming into the bathhouse, brow furrowed, expression flat--

And freezes when he gets to the water and notices someone who should definitely not...be there...if he was on the right side.

(Alarmingly, he can't even be sure if he went on the wrong or right side or not. He's tired and exasperated and frustrated and angry.)]

... Lady Instructor.

[A pause...and then he sighs. Whatever. Fuck it. They already stripped in the trial (fat load of good that did) and now... here they are.

He steps into the water.]
